Tegg Tackles Tough Canandaigua Field For 2nd Career Big-Block Triumph
Victory Lane appearance highlights return after near fatal motorcycle crash one year earlier
Canandaigua, NY – June 15, 2013 – Tom Skibinski, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR (585-350-8997)
It had been 17 years since Gil Tegg Jr. last reached the winner's circle at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
The last 12 months may have seemed just as long for the popular driver from Rochester, N.Y. as a life-threatening motorcycle accident suffered in May of 2012 made his return to the track very unlikely and a trip to victory lane even more improbable.
“Last year at this time my right arm was broke, my neck was broke and I was laid up for awhile living with my dad … things couldn't have been much gloomier,” understated Tegg, now 41, who underwent three months of rehabilitation ---also had two vertebrae fused together and experienced optical nerve damage in his right eye--- just to get back on his feet, never mind buckling back in behind the wheel of a mighty Big-Block Modified. “I took some time to reflect back and I thought 'man, I'm just lucky to be walking around let alone driving a race car.”
A Canandaigua regular for nearly half his life, Tegg survived a pair of restarts over the last five circuits to grab a long-awaited checkered flag in the memorable 35-lap Team Tiremasters Big-Block Modified main event.
Kevin Ridley (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman), Nick Cooper (Castner Performance 305 Sprint), Mike Welch (Parts Plus Street Stock) and Mike Minutolo Sr. (Pure Stock) added to their own trophy collections while Jason Caldwell triumphed for the first time ever in the Community Car Care of Waterloo New Legends Sportsman finale to close out Phelps Cement Products & Charlie's Restaurant Night at the historic Ontario County Fairgrounds oval.

Tomkins Breaks Drought With 46th Career Canandaigua Checkered Flag Gray & Smith also score first wins as Ruggles, Excell and Hendershot repeat despite rain
Canandaigua, NY – June 1, 2013 – Dave Roberts, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR Correspondent
Mother Nature attempted to rear her ugly head Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, but it was to no avail as the racing program was completed by 10:15pm with three new winners added to the 2013 season.
The night was interrupted by a 35-minute rain delay following the night’s qualifying events. Track maintenance, along with nearly the entire pit area, worked the track in and put together a super racing surface for the feature events.
Gary Tomkins (Team Tire Master Big-Block Modified); Steve Gray (Safety Awareness Sportsman) and Blane Smith (Parts Plus Street Stock) scored victories for the first time this season. Smith’s win erased a six-week winning streak by current points leader Mike Welch.
For Tomkins, it had been four years since he had won a feature event at the Ontario County Fairgrounds. Tomkins, of Clifton Springs, NY, drove into the lead on lap 22 and held off a determined Matt Sheppard at the finish as the pair had to go through heavy lapped traffic during the second half of the scheduled Team Tire Tester Big-Block Modified 35-lap feature.
“This is a lot of relief…and a lot of joy,” Tomkins said in victory lane. “As you can see by the side of the car, it has to make a lot of it’s own money. Tonight, everything worked out.”
Wiesner & Minutolo also take first '13 checkers while Welch, Ruggles Siri return to victory lane
Canandaigua, NY – May 25, 2013 – Dave Roberts, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR Correspondent
August 20, 2011. That was the last time Canandaigua Motorsports Park Big-Block Modified racing star Justin Haers had won a feature event on the fast half-mile oval.
That is … until last Saturday night.
Haers, of Phelps, NY, started 11th and patiently moved through the field, taking the lead on lap 31 and going on to the win before a big crowd at CMP in the 35-lap Team Tire Masters Big-Block Modified main.
“I think that I’ve had about a dozen second-place finishes,” said Haers in victory lane. “Our car was a little tight tonight, but it got better in the late laps and that helped us.”
It had been a tough past few weeks for Haers at Canandaigua. Two weeks ago, the power steering went after Haers was solidly into a top-five spot. Last week, it was a flat tire that took him out of another great finish.
“We’re going to keep working on it. We did some good things in Florida in February but we’ve had some problems up here. Right now, this feels awesome.”
Dave Allen and Mike O’Brien led the initial laps when the main event started. Matt Billings, who makes the weekly trip from Brockville, Ontario, was very impressive, taking the lead on lap eight and going out to a big lead after a restart. While Billings enjoyed the top spot, others were moving through the pack toward the front. Three-time winner in 2013, Matt Sheppard, who began the feature from the 18th starting position, was up to sixth by lap 14 while Haers then ran fourth.
By lap 20, that big lead was gone and Billings was feeling the pressure from Haers. His run for his first-ever CMP victory ended after Haers took over the top spot on lap 31. Sheppard got by Billings on lap 32 and looked ready to challenge Haers for this third win in a row before a left-rear flat tire on lap 33 sent Sheppard to the pits. On the restart, it was all Haers as he went on to get the win.
Sheppard Scores 'Hat Trick' Saturday At Canandaigua Motorsports Park
Cool, Welch, Excell, Ruggles & Siri also take checkered flags in 5th show of 2013 season
Canandaigua, NY – May 18, 2013 – Dave Roberts, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR Correspondent
For the second week in a row, Matt Sheppard came from the 18th starting spot to win his third of the 2013 season at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night in the Team Tire Masters Big Block Modified 35-lap feature on Empire/Beck's Recycling and Corby‘s Collision Night.
Other repeat winners were Mike Welch (Parts Plus Street Stock), Derek Excell (Pure Stock) and Jordan Siri (Community Car Care of Waterloo Legends Sportsman) while Greg Cool (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman) and Darryl Ruggles (Castner Performance 305 Sprints) reached victory lane for the first time in 2013.
Sheppard, 30 of Waterloo, NY, took the lead from pole-sitter Dave Rauscher on lap 25, making a move to the inside of Rauscher as the pair entered turn three and was never headed for the remainder of the race.
“This car has been awesome all year long,” said Sheppard, as he explained his night to the large CMP crowd that had filtered to the Ontario County Fairgrounds. “It might’ve been even better tonight.”
“We went from an 18th starting position to the lead without a caution period against the type of competition they have here every week,” Sheppard added. “It’s a lot of fun racing against these guys.”
Sheppard Sizzles For 2nd Win of Season In Fast-Paced Canandaigua Card
Four of six features run off caution-free as superb track conditions greet nearly 100 racers
Canandaigua, NY – May 11, 2013 – Tom Skibinski, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR (585-350-8997)
Two-time defending points champion Matt Sheppard from Waterloo, NY returned to winning form Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, charging from 18th to grab the lead from Danny Johnson with just four laps left and capture the thrilling Team Tiremasters Big-Block Modified victory.
Dave Marcuccilli (SafetyAwareness Solutions Sportsman), Nick Cooper (Castner Performance 305 Sprint), Derek Excell (Pure Stock) and Andrew Jacobson (Community Car Care of Waterloo New Legends Sportsman) each triumphed in their caution-free features while Mike Welch remained undefeated following his fourth straight Parts Plus Street Stock win on Champion Power Equipment 'Mothers of Racing' Night at the popular Ontario County Fairgrounds oval.
Sheppard emerged as the first repeat Big-Block winner after four events, at the same time keeping Johnson winless with a bold maneuver that sent sparks flying in a late-race pass under the starter's stand in front of the grandstand crowd.
Billy Dunn Captures Canandaigua Motorsports Park Modified Main
Welch & Donk claim third straight feature races as Ridley repeats in dominant run
Canandaigua, NY – May 4, 2013 – Dave Roberts, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR Correspondent
Billy Dunn of Watertown, New York bested a star-studded field of Team Tiremasters Big-Block Modifieds to get his first win of the season Saturday on American Equipment-Labatt Blue/Blue Light night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park as sunny skies once again greeted race drivers and fans at the Ontario County Fairgrounds fast half-mile oval.
Dunn started third in the main event and needed 21 laps to grab the lead. Once out front, Dunn was able to command the top spot as second-place finisher Matt Sheppard, who went into second on a lap 20 restart, could never really challenge for the lead.
Dunn won twice at CMP in 2012.
This was a fun race,” Dunn said afterwards. “I remembered when I was racing Vince, I got up to him and showed him my nose. He must have seen that because he then moved away from me.”
The race for this one started early. On lap six, Dunn was able to come up beside Vitale as the two ran under the starters stand before the two would eventually come together. Both were able to maintain their position as the yellow flag came out for a car that came to a stop in turn one on lap seven.
When the yellow came out, Vitale would find some more speed and had a seven car advantage over Dunn by lap 12. A couple of laps later, Dunn would close the margin as the two went into lapped traffic. Dunn would take over the lead just before the yellow came out on lap 20.
Sheppard Back On Track With First Canandaigua Win Of 2013 Season Welch and Donk repeat as Ridley, Excell and Jacobson capture initial checkered flags
Canandaigua, NY – April 27, 2013 – Dave Roberts, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR Correspondent
A beautiful night greeted race fans Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park as the fast Ontario County Fairgrounds based half-mile oval escaped the rainy and cold weather that has hampered the facility for the previous two weeks.
Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, N.Y. made his presence on the evening known, winning his first of the 2013 campaign. Sheppard took the lead off a lap 27 restart and went on for the 35 lap Team Tiremaster Big-Block Modified victory. Sheppard started 11th on the grid and moved himself through the field.
Sheppard got himself into second on lap 19 and pressured then leader Vic Coffey. Another caution period later on proved to be to his advantage.
“Starting 11th in this field is tough enough. You knew if you could get by these guys, you car was running well,” Sheppard said in victory lane.
It has been a tough go for Sheppard. Saturday night’s win was his first of the 2013 season.

Alan Johnson Charges To 3rd Annual Jan Corcoran Memorial Title At CMP
Late race rally rewards all-time fairgrounds feature winner with 117th Big-Block triumph
Canandaigua, NY – April 6, 2013 – Tom Skibinski, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR (585-350-8997)
The 50th Anniversary Season of auto racing at Canandaigua Motorsports Park began the same way it did eight times in the past, with open-wheel veteran Alan Johnson kicking off the 2013 campaign on Saturday evening with a dramatic victory in the 3rd Annual Jan Corcoran Memorial presented by Empire/Seneca Recycling.
With young racer Larry Wight leading 47 of the 64-lap distance and looking to become the 96th Modified winner since the inaugural event in 1953, it was Johnson instead taking over for the final nine circuits to extend his all-time track mark to 117 Big-Block victories after a late race rally netted the Middlesex driver and car owner Kenny Saya the $6,400 top prize.
Marcuccilli 'Golden' As Corcoran Memorial Kicks Off 50th Canandaigua Season
Donk, Chapman and Siri beat the cold to share opening day honors at Ontario County oval
Canandaigua, NY – April 5, 2013 – Tom Skibinski, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR (585-350-8997)
Capturing his first two Sportsman feature wins last summer, Dave Marcuccilli ushered in Canandaigua Motorsports Park's 50th Anniversary Season of auto racing on Friday night, outlasting open-wheel invader Sammy Reakes IV to officially kick off the expanded Jan Corcoran Memorial Weekend.
Former track regular Charlie Donk (Castner Performance 305 Sprint Car), full-fender frontrunner Eric Chapman (Pure Stock) and second-generation Community Car Care of Waterloo New Legends Sportsman chauffeur Jordan Siri also collected opening day checkered flags while Vic Coffey and Peter Britten topped a strong field of Team Tiremasters Big-Block Modified entries in a special pair of timed practice runs around the ultra-smooth half-miler.
The fairgrounds' earliest season-opener was arguably the most frigid ever as unseasonably cold temperatures combined with a pesky wind chill factor dropped the barometer into the low 30s by race time. “We made sure there was plenty of coffee and hot chocolate to go around tonight,” remarked CMP Promoter Jeremie Corcoran during the traditional tribute to his mother who passed away in October of 2010. “It was just as tough a night for our employees as the fans and racers, at the same time providing a great example of the kind of loyalty and support there is every week here at the speedway.”

Canandaigua Motorsports Park & Ransomville Speedway to Continue to Offer Friendship Pass to Its Competitors

The program will be allowed for Ransomville Speedway's Investors Service Sportsman and Ki-Po Chevrolet Streetstock divisions along with the Canandaigua Motorsports Park Sportsman and Pure Stock classes only.
