Dunn was 0.667 seconds better than second-place finisher Jimmy Phelps when the pair crossed the finish line. Dunn started 13th when the drop of the green started the race.
“We really had to work for this one,” Dunn said in victory lane. “We’ve been struggling here for the last month. Our team has been working hard to get us through this. I’m glad we were fast tonight.”
Dunn chose the top of the track as his favorite lane.
“That’s how we got the lead. It was really good up there tonight.”
Daryl Hilkert, who was celebrating his birthday on this particular night, started on the pole and went off to an early lead. When the first yellow of the night came out on lap three, Rob Bellinger was ready to take charge.
Capacity Crowd Witnesses 4th Career CMP Triumphs for Phelps & Yonge
NASCAR Cup stars Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney & J.J. Yeley help fill 'Land of Legends' field
Canandaigua, NY – August 11, 2012 – Cup Weekend at The Glen helped lure asphalt stars Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney and J.J. Yeley to Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday, yet when the dirt finally settled it was Jimmy Phelps and Lance Yonge taking checkered flags in front of the capacity crowd that packed the Ontario County Fairgrounds to the rafters.
A two-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series winner at CMP, Blaney finished 11th in the Original Pizza Logs Big-Block finale some 17-seconds behind Phelps while former fairgrounds Modified driver Yonge captured the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint A-Main ahead of fourth-place Stewart. Yeley settled for 19th one lap down to the leaders in the sprint car feature.
Cobra Motorhomes/Wilkins RV and North Eastern Pool & Spa presented the big six card that attracted 127 cars, with divisional point leaders Dan Wiesner (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman Modified), Russ Marsden (Parts Plus Street Stock) and Vance Vanderwall (Pure Stock) extending their advantages while Jeff Davoli scored his second New Legends Sportsman victory of the 2012 campaign.
“These guys have their A-Game and knows these tracks real well, and that's what I like, going up against the best at every track we visit,” remarked reigning NASCAR Cup points king Stewart, who won a qualifying heat last summer at Canandaigua before rain washed out the main event that the Columbus, Ind. Superstar was unable to return for. “But now we've got some good notes and we'll be back to give 'em another run next year. We got a lot more racey as we went on tonight and it was a great run with Chuck (Hebing) so we're pleased how things turned out.”
Canandaigua, NY – August 4, 2012 – Veteran Danny Johnson stayed right in sync with the sweltering heat Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, scoring a sizzling victory in the 35-lap Original Pizza Logs Big-Block Modified feature to kick off the last full month of summer racing at the Ontario County Fairgrounds.
Local chauffeur Todd Henderson (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman Modified) and traveling star Billy Jaycox (Castner Performance 305 Sprint) notched their first wins of the season while Nate Peckham (Parts Plus Street Stock), Eric Chapman (Pure Stock) and Tyler Meeks (New Legends Sportsman) each triumphed for the third time to close out F.X. Caprara Car Companies-Parts Plus Nite at CMP.
A speedy squad of 10 youngsters also gained some memorable track time on the hallowed half-miler, with special Kids Power Wheels races held on the frontstretch to entertain the heated grandstand contingent. The initial three-lap feature was won by 4 year-old Kaylee Marcuccilli (daughter of Sportsman driver Dave Marcuccilli) from Cayuga while 6 year-old Zoelle Payne (daughter of Johnson's crew chief Mike Payne) from Stanley won the 4-lap nightcap.
Less than two hours later, Payne returned to the winner's circle following Johnson's most convincing victory of the 2012 campaign steering the potent blue no. 27J Honeoye Auto Parts-Page Trucking-Lax Express/Bicknell machine.
Tony Stewart Rolls Into Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Aug. 11th! He will take on the best of the Empire Super Sprints.
CANANDAIGUA, NY – The Ontario County Fairgrounds will be a buzz on Saturday night August 11th as defending Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart will be on hand taking on the very best from the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints (ESS). Hot off his World of Outlaws victory just this past Tuesday night, “Smoke” is not just making an appearance, he will be behind the wheel to win!
Canandaigua Motorsports Park had Stewart on hand last year for the yearly visit by the ESS winged warriors but that was a last minute decision. Through hard working efforts by promoter Jeremie Corcoran he is guaranteed to make his return for Sprintacular 2012.
What makes this night extra special is that with ESS joining a full complete Saturday night program the admission was set at $19. Now with the announced appearance of Stewart, it was decided not to increase the admission at all. The night will be brought to you by Cobra Motorhomes/Wilkins RV and North Eastern Pool and Spa.
“We just felt that we wanted to bring in Tony as an extra to what will be an already exciting night. I just said to myself that this is for the fans so we didn’t increase the admission at all.” said Corcoran on the appearance of the Columbus, Indiana star. “We feel this will be a great way to introduce Canandaigua to many new fans and show them what type of racing we have here every Saturday night. ESS puts of a great show and along with all our regular divisions the fans will be in for a treat.”
The traveling ESS sprinters will be bringing in their own stars such as Chuck Hebing, Justin Barger, Lance Yonge, Shawn Donath, Michael Parent, Charlie Donk, Sammy Reakes IV, Cory Sparks, Mike Stelter and many more. Stewart has won with the Outlaws and also the All-Stars this year so he will be looking to take his Office Depot #14 to the winners circle against the best ESS has to offer.
Also on the card will be the 800 horsepower big block modifieds, sportsman, street stocks, pure stocks, the new legends sportsman and the exciting 305 sprint cars.
While the Canandaigua faithful know who Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Justin Haers, Jimmy Phelps, Alan Johnson, Billy Dunn, Gary Tomkins and Steve Paine are. First time visitors will get to see the ground pounding big blocks that are showcased weekly at the track known as the “Land of Legends”
Advanced sale tickets can be obtained by check or money order by mail to Jeremie Corcoran, P.O. Box 671, Brewerton, NY. 13029.
