Todd Henderson Waits out Rain Delay to Score Third Sportsman Win of ’08 at Canandaigua Speedway
Canandaigua Results 7/27/08 Weedsport, NY July 27, 2008 By Dan Kapuscinski, Canandaigua Speedway PR and Promotions Coordinator
Not even a nearly two hour rain delay could
slow down Canandaigua’s Todd Henderson on his way to his third win of
the season in the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified ranks at Canandaigua
Speedway.
The win marked Henderson’s 20th career
Sportsman victory at the ‘Land of Legends’, putting him in a tie for
second on the all-time win list with 2-time track champion Mike
Button.
The driver of the no. 18h pocketed the lion’s
share of the winner’s purse, including a $100 victory bonus from
Benedict Performance. “We probably should have had got one last week,”
said Henderson. “We were in the wrong place at the wrong time,
picking up the flat but we made up for it tonight. It always helps to
start up front like we did, but the car was right on. The track came
in perfect; the guys really did a nice job to get this track back in
racing condition.”
Dan Wiesner, Daryl Hilkert, Anthony Rizzardo,
and Tom Juhl filled out the top five runners in the Sportsman main
event. Adam Depuy took the checkered flags in the DIRTcar Street
Stocks, while Marc Minutolo grabbed a second win in a row in the
PureStox and Timex Morgan stole the 15-lap New York Modified Midget
A-Main. After two brief rain showers slowed the racing action at around
7:30pm after the three NYMM heat races, the racing program had to be
shortened in order to try and get the rest of the schedule in ahead of
the 11pm curfew.
As a result only the Sportsman Modified heats
were run, all other divisions besides the NYMM ran features
only. Unfortunately, the Sportsman Trifecta 45 also had to be
shortened to a regular 25-lap main event in the interest of time. Gary
Hoteling and Marcus Dinkins started the 25-lapSportsman finale from the
front row leading the 22-car field to the green flag.
Driving the Dash Racewear no. 17, Dinkins
snagged the early race lead before a multiple car incident occurred in
the second turn on lap-2. The incident began when the no. 11 of Ben
Wheeler, the no. 20x of Kevin Ridley, and the no. 29g of Steve Gray
bottled up between turns one and two. Gray and Ridley then made
contact sending Ridley around which collected several cars including
Nick Guererri, Eric Giguere, Tim Currier, Ryan Susice, Fran Hilton, and
Joe Cook Jr. Most cars were able to continue with the exception of
last week’s feature winner, Currier, and Guererri. Ridley made it
back on track for the restart but would head pit side after just a few
laps finishing the night in 20th position.
It marked the first time all season that
Ridley had not finished in the top five. When the field came back to
green Dinkins led Hoteling, Henderson, Hilkert, and Phil LaVare down
the front straight. Dinkins would lead two more circuits before
Henderson, who had won his heat race earlier in the night by over a
full straightaway, blasted into the race lead to lead lap-4. Henderson
took command of the field, racing to a 2-second advantage on his
competitors before the race’s next caution flag would come out on
lap-7.
Kyle LaVare lost the handle on the no. 88 in
turn four, slowing the field one more time. With Henderson the race
leader, the field doubled-up for another restart. Dinkins restarted
to the outside of row one, but got a slow start going in for the
restart in turn three. As the cars rounded through the apex of turns
three and four, Dinkins got sideways and came down the racetrack
making contact with the no. 44 of Hoteling who re-started in third.
Hoteling ran into the inside burm in the
fourth turn bouncing back into Dinkins, sending both cars across the
racetrack in front of the rest of the field. With the two cars
sliding across the track, Phil LaVare and Rob Bussey had no place to
go. LaVare tried to slow his momentum, but the no. 8L bit into the
racetrack causing the machine to tumble at least once into the outside
catch fence.
Bussey, Dinkins, and Hoteling would all be
collected ending top five runs for each driver. When it was all said
and done, all drivers were just fine after this multi-car
collision. After two cautions on the 7th circuit, Henderson was able
to rattle of several green flag laps in front of the field. By lap-19
Henderson held a comfortable lead on Hilkert, Wiesner, Rizzardo, and
Juhl in the top five.
By this time Henderson had approached lapped
traffic, including the no. 11nz of Peter Gordon. As the passing flag
was displayed Henderson and Hilkert were able to make their way by
safely. However, Wiesner had a tougher time in the Monroe Wheelchair
no. 66. As Wiesner and Gordon rounded out of turn four, the two made
contact. Wiesner, who was on the extreme low side trying to make the
pass, was able to keep control but Gordon lost it and found himself
sitting sideways on the front straight. Cars tried to find a way by
on the high and low side of the Speedway, with all but one
succeeding.
The no. 2L of Loren Lincoln was in a battle on
the Speedway and did not see the no. 11nz until the last moment.
Lincoln locked his brakes and slid directly into Gordon just before
the start finish line. Both cars were inflicted with heavy damage,
resulting in the hook treatment for each. When the track was cleared,
Henderson restarted as the leader with 5-laps to go. Hilkert,
Wiesner, Rizzardo, and Juhl lined up single file behind the no. 18h,
throwing everything they had at the race leader.
Henderson proved to be too touch though over
the final five circuits, racing to his 20th career Sportsman Modified
win at Canandaigua Speedway. Wiesner managed to edge Hilkert at the
line for the runner-up spot with Rizzardo, Juhl, Steve Gray, AJ Lewis,
Ryan Susice, Ben Wheeler, and Fran Hilton finishing the top ten.
Ridley, who had a 70-point lead coming into
the night, will undoubtedly take a hit in the Championship standings
as his closest competitors, Wiesner and Gray, each had top six
finishes.
The 20-lap DIRTcar Street Stock feature saw
Kevin Collins and Leroy Lewis pace the field out front. For the
second week in a row, Lewis would emerge as the early race leader in
the no. 07. All eyes however were on the no. 57b of Bubba Burnell, as
he quickly powered into the runner-up spot from his fourth starting
position. After grabbing second, it wouldn’t take long for Burnell to
claim the race lead. The no. 57b dove under Lewis for the top spot on
the low side to lead lap-4. Burnell paced the field until the
event’s first caution flag on lap-9.
Front row starter Kevin Collins lost his right
rear wheel out of turn four, causing the car to spin to the inside of
the Speedway. The no. 16 of Mike Schultz collected the wheel forcing
him pit side. Schultz would return to the track for a brief time
before retiring for good on lap-11. At the same time that Collins
brought out the caution in turn four, top five runner Mike Rasbeck
also spun in turn two. The no. 00R of Rasbeck had to be towed into
the pit area ending his day.
When the field was ready for green Burnell led
Depuy, Blane Smith, Welch, and Fisher across the stripe. Depuy, who
started 5th and managed to close on Burnell before the yellow, slid
his car to the outside of the Speedway on the restart. The no. 99
found the bite he was looking for as he powered to the outside of
Burnell in turns three and four, and took the lead coming down to
complete lap-10.
The outside pass proved to be the winning
move, as Depuy was never again challenged for the win. It was Depuy’s
18th career win at the ‘Land of Legends’, and third win of 2008. “We
may only have nine or ten cars, but you never know who is going to win
this thing,” said Depuy. “I really wasn’t looking forward to having
to restart to the outside of Bubba, but somehow I was able to make it
work and get by. The track was fast, and the car just stuck out
there. I pulled it back to the bottom though as soon as I was able to
get by.” Burnell, Blane Smith, Fisher, and Welch completed the top
five at the finish.
Point leader Andy Fisk had a terrible night,
twice spinning and finishing one lap behind the leaders in 8th
position. The 10-lap PureStox main event saw three different race
leaders, and a green-to-checkered finish. Chris Guererri started the
race from the point, but the car immediately broke out of turn two
handing the lead over to Bryan Faulkner. Faulkner would come around to
lead lap-1, but fourth place starter Roger Bush was on the move.
Bush moved to the outside of Faulkner in turn four and grabbed the lead
on the second circuit. Bush paced the field for 2-laps before
Minutolo made his charge in the no. 25b.
Minutolo wasted little time dropping Bush back
to the runner-up spot just before halfway on lap-4. From there
Minutolo ran away from the field for his second PureStox win in a row
and 5th of 2008. “Not much to say tonight, the car ran great once
again,” said Minutolo, who celebrated with a couple of victory donuts
in the back straight infield. “We didn’t have too many cars tonight,
but I’ll take the win. My team really has the car working good right
now.” Bush hung on for a great runner-up finish ahead of Faulkner in
the top three. The New York Modified Midget A-Main turned into a two
car show. Heat race winners Timex Morgan and Eric Rudolph were the
class of the field, jumping out front right from the drop of the
green. Rudolph, the young son of 17-time Canandaigua Speedway Modified
feature winner Charlie Rudolph, hounded Morgan for the entire 15-lap
distance but was unable to do anything with the all-black no. 2 Lafler
Chassis. Morgan would lead wire-to-wire on his way to sweeping the
night in the NYMM main.
Rudolph finished a very strong runner-up well
ahead of the rest of the top five including Doug Etue, Frank
Jarkiewicz, and Darryl Ruggles. “Lafler Chassis is the only way to
go,” said Morgan. “They have won some 80% of 600cc Sprint races in
New York State, and tonight was another example of that with us getting
the win and Eric riding in second. I knew he was close, on that last
restart he gave me a little sign to let me know he was there. It was
great running here tonight at Canandaigua.” Next Saturday night at
Canandaigua Speedway, Star Headlight presents the Drivers vs. Kids Ice
Cream race. The DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds will make their return
along with the Sportsman, Street Stocks, PureStox, and the ESDCA Mod
Lites at 7pm.

Paine Gains Advantage on Sheppard Late for Second Canandaigua Speedway Victory
July, 20 2008 By Dan Kapuscinski, Canandaigua Speedway PR and Promotions Coordinator
Steve Paine took a tumble at the Georgetown
Speedway Thursday evening, but bounced back for his second win of the
season Saturday night at Canandaigua Speedway. Paine snagged the lead
from race leader Matt Sheppard on lap-27 and sailed to the $1,500
victory on Honeoye Auto Parts Night at the Races.
Paine was pleased in victory lane in front of the Canandaigua crowd.
“We won last night at Black Rock, and the win
here tonight is really good after the flip,” said Paine. “When Matt
and I were running clear we were about the same, but then we got in a
little traffic and that left me catch up. He hooked the cushion once
in turn one, and then really hard in turn three. That gave me the
opening.”
Sheppard held on for second with Derrick
Podsiadlo, Justin Haers, and Chuck Bower rounding out the top five
finishers. Tim Currier took the Integrity Tool 25-lap Sportsman main,
while Andy Fisk and Marc Minutolo took the Street Stock and PureStox
features. Paul Habeck and Derrick Podsiadlo started the Honeoye Auto
Parts 35-lap main event from row number one. The Penn Yan Mini Storage
no. 21 took the top spot at the drop of the green flag with Ron
Cartwright and Haers filing in behind him.
Podsiadlo built a comfortable lead on the
field, as Sheppard began to pick his way through the pack. By lap-4
Sheppard ran to the top five, and on lap-9 he made the low side move
on Haers for the runner-up position. Sheppard was certainly on a
tear, as on the next circuit the no. 9s dove low on Podsialdo.
Unfortunately for Sheppard, the no. 84 of Gary Tomkins lost the handle
in turn two while running in the top five. On the restart Podsiadlo
led Sheppard, Haers, Chad Homan, and Gil Tegg Jr.
Podsialdo took the low side on the restart
which gave Sheppard all the room he needed to power into the lead off
turn four. Sheppard then immediately began to pull away from the
field. With Sheppard out front Paine began his charge in the no. 7x.
By lap-18 Paine made his way passed Podsialdo for the runner-up
position and looked to reel in the no. 9s. As the cushion continued to
build between the corners, it was evident that some cars were having
issues.
As Sheppard closed in on lapped cars, Paine
caught the leader and began to apply pressure. On the 26th circuit
Sheppard found the cushion in turn three and climbed over it. The no.
9s got way out of shape leaving Paine the entire low side of the
Speedway to take over the lead. Sheppard rebounded from the mistake
quickly, and stayed on the back bumper of the no. 7x for the next
several laps. Eventually though, Paine checked out in the lead and
steamed under Dave Farney’s checkered flags for his second win of the
2008 season.
Sheppard once again ran a great race to
finish second with Podsiadlo, Haers, Bower, Todd Burley, Homan,
Charlie Donk, Tomkins, and Vinnie Vitale in the front ten. Tim Currier
has had less than stellar luck this season in the DIRTcar Sportsman
Modified division.
For two weeks in a row Currier has led his
heat race only to have a flat tire put him out of the running.
Saturday night, a flat tire finally worked in Currier’s favor. Joe
Cook Jr. and Currier started the 25-lap Integrity Tool 25-lap main
event from the front row, and it was Currier gaining the advantage.
Currier led the first 13-laps with ease in the Currier Plastics no. 10
before Nick Guererri brought out a caution flag in the fourth
turn. Currier restarted at the point with hard charging Todd Henderson,
Kevin Ridley, Rob Bussey, and Anthony Rizzardo in tow.
Henderson looked to be the fastest car on
the Speedway, and in turned out that way on the restart as the no. 18h
blasted to the point off turn four. Henderson stretched his lead
after lap-14 and looked to be well on his way to his third win of
2008. However, after a caution for the spinning Eric Giguere in turn
two, it became clear that Henderson’s right rear tire was going soft
with just 4-laps to go. Henderson tried to keep his momentum going on
the restart, but the no. 18h slid high right away handing the lead
over to Currier once again.
Henderson fell through the field rapidly,
eventually pulling off the Speedway in turn one. With Henderson out of
the event, Currier powered to the lead for the second time and pulled
away from both Ridley and Steve Gray for his first win of 2008. The
victory was Currier’s third career triumph at the ‘Land of
Legends.’ “We lost brakes at about lap-15 after I hooked the cushion,”
said Currier. “I wanted to keep running the top, but I had to let the
car roll more without brakes and keep it on the bottom. I didn’t
notice Todd had the flat until he pulled out of the way, but finally
we had something go our way this season.”Ridley, Gray, Dan Wiesner,
and Rob Bussey filled out the top five runners in the 25-lapper.
The 20-lap DIRTcar Street Stock finale saw
‘The Lone Racer’ Leroy Lewis steam to the point and lead the first
11-laps. Lewis ran a tremendous racing line in the no. 07, but made
one slight mistake in turn two which was costly. 2007 Rookie of the
Year Andy Fisk was able to take the top spot in turn number two to
lead lap-12 out front. Fisk, who finished in the runner-up spot the
last two weeks to Mike Welch, would not be denied Saturday night racing
to victory in the no. 33.
The win was the first of the season for
Fisk, and his third career victory. “I was beginning to wonder if I
was ever going to get back here,” said Fisk. “The car was really good
tonight, and I hate that we have finished second so may times this
season. It makes you want it so much more.” Blane Smith, Chris
Fisher, Mike Welch, and Nate Peckham finished the top five runners.
Marc Minutolo was declared the winner of the
12-lap PureStox event after Vance Vanderwall was declared illegal in
post race tech. Minutolo ran a smooth race in the second position on
the Speedway, but in the end was able to bring his no. 25b machine to
victory lane once again in 2008. “I don’t know what happened with
Vance, it is not really my business. I am just glad to be back in
victory lane,” said Minutolo.
“The car ran great tonight, and I just have
to thank all my crew and my sponsors, especially my dad Mike. This is
really a family team.” Roger Bush, Bryan Faulkner, George LaVare Jr.,
and Chris Guererri followed Minutolo across the line in the feature
order.
Next Saturday night it is the Ontario Fair
Week “Sportsman Trifecta 45” featuring three 15-lap main events at
Canandaigua Speedway.
The Sportsman will be joined by the Street
Stocks, PureStox, and the New York Modified Midgets with racing
starting at 7pm.

Todd Burley Races to Career First at Canandaigua Speedway; Invader Rich Vinson Claims 358 Syracuse Qualifier
Canandaigua Results 7/13/08 Weedsport, NY July 13, 2008 By Dan Kapuscinski, Canandaigua Speedway PR and Promotions Coordinator
Todd Burley won 14 Sportsman Modified feature
events in his career at Canandaigua Speedway, but had never visited
victory lane in a Big-Block Modified. That changed Saturday night
with a mid-race pass on Derrick Podsiadlo, as the no. 89b took Dave
Farney’s checkered flag on Dig Safely New York “Kid’s Flag Night”
presented by Currier Plastics.
Burley won by over a full straight-away, claiming the $1,500 top prize.
“It feels good to finally get a win here in
a Modified, we’ve been trying for quite some time,” said Burley in
victory lane. “Of course I would have liked to have beat guys like
Gary (Tomkins), Matt (Sheppard), and Steve (Paine) to do it, but we’ll
take it. When you are able to beat guys like that you know you are
doing something.”
Paul Guererri and Podsiadlo started the
35-lap Big-Block Modified main event from the front row with Podsiadlo
taking the early advantage. Burley started the feature from 5th, and
began to pick his way through the field from the very start.
As the race unfolded it looked as though
Podsiadlo would be the man to beat in the Penn Yan Mini Storage no.
21. Podsialdo had built quite the lead over the rest of the field, but
it would not take long for Burley to mount a challenge.
Near the halfway point Burley began to find
his racing line, and closed in on the no. 21. Eventually, Burley was
able to make a low move and breeze into the race lead never looking
back as he stretched his lead on the way to victory.
Podsialdo finished all alone in second followed by Shannon Whaley, Vinnie Vitale, and Chuck Bower in the top five.
Western New York driver Rich Vinson in the
no. 93 came to Canandaigua Saturday night with his 358-Modified in
search of the $100 bonus and Syracuse Qualifier. He was able to do
just that with a fine 8th place finish in the final rundown. Vinson
edged out four other 358’s in the field vying for the guaranteed spot.
One of those was the no. 2B of Ron
Cartwright Jr. Cartwright though took a vicious ride into the first
turn wall, flipping his machine up and over the turn one barrier. The
no. 2B ended up out of the ball park, but Cartwright was able to climb
out of the car under his own power. He did take a ride in the
ambulance for pre-cautionary measures.
The 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Modified main
event saw Steve Gray in the no. 29g pull into victory lane for the 3rd
time this season. Gray passed Canadian front-runner AJ Lewis for the
top spot on his way to victory.
Lewis held on for a strong second place run
after crashing heavily down the front straight while leading one week
ago. The no. 24a pressured Gray all the way to the finish line in
the Currier Plastics main event.
Gray was a happy driver in victory lane after picking up his 11th career win at the ‘Land of Legends’ oval.
“I really don’t know what to say,”
commented Gray in victory lane. “I just have to thank all my guys.
This car runs absolutely great, even though it is yellow. My wife
wasn’t a big fan of yellow, but I think it will work. These cars
don’t have a lot of power, but you still have to work the throttle quite
a bit. We just seemed to have it figured out lately.”
Point leader Kevin Ridley came home third ahead of Rob Bussey, and Anthony Rizzardo in the front five.
The DIRTcar Street Stock main event saw a
familiar face in victory lane for the fourth time this season, and
third consecutive week. The no. 00 of Mike Welch once again took the
top spot, pulling down his 31st career win at the ‘Land of Legends.’
“We had a rough start to the season,”
laughed Welch. “I told everyone I was going to start over and we
needed to start winning in July. The car has been perfect this month,
and we have been able to put some finishes together. I want to thank
my sponsors and everyone involved.”
Andy Fisk finished second to Welch for the
second week in a row in the no. 33. The 2007 Rookie of the Year has
finished second six times this season, as he looks to return to victory
lane in 2008. Fisk held of hard chargers Chris Fisher, Bubba Burnell,
and Adam Depuy in the top five.
The PureStox feature event saw the no. 6 of
George LaVare Jr. pull into victory lane after the disqualification
of race winner Eric Chapman. LaVare had a solid second place run on the
track, and after post race tech he was rewarded with the top spot in
the final rundown.
LaVare Jr., who is hearing impaired,
received a warm welcome in victory lane and was accompanied by his
father for the victory lane ceremonies and interview.
“The car has been running good but we still
need to make some changes,” said LaVare Sr., as he proudly stood next
to his son in victory lane. “We don’t have the right cam in this
engine just yet, so it is a little slow on starts. We want to thank
everyone for their support, this means a lot.”
The final finishing order saw Roger Bush, Bryan Faulkner, Chris Gingerich, and Floyd Bush in the top five.
Next Saturday at night at Canandaigua
Speedway it is Honeoye Auto Parts Night at the Races featuring the
mighty DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds. The DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds,
DIRTcar Street Stocks, and PureStox will join the card along with the
WNYR 98.5 FM Crazy Chicks-n-Cars at 7pm.
