NASCAR Cup stars Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney & J.J. Yeley help fill 'Land of Legends' field

Canandaigua, NY – August 11, 2012 – Cup Weekend at The Glen helped lure asphalt stars Tony Stewart, Dave Blaney and J.J. Yeley to Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday, yet when the dirt finally settled it was Jimmy Phelps and Lance Yonge taking checkered flags in front of the capacity crowd that packed the Ontario County Fairgrounds to the rafters.
A two-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series winner at CMP, Blaney finished 11th in the Original Pizza Logs Big-Block finale some 17-seconds behind Phelps while former fairgrounds Modified driver Yonge captured the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint A-Main ahead of fourth-place Stewart. Yeley settled for 19th one lap down to the leaders in the sprint car feature.
Cobra Motorhomes/Wilkins RV and North Eastern Pool & Spa presented the big six card that attracted 127 cars, with divisional point leaders Dan Wiesner (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman Modified), Russ Marsden (Parts Plus Street Stock) and Vance Vanderwall (Pure Stock) extending their advantages while Jeff Davoli scored his second New Legends Sportsman victory of the 2012 campaign.
“These guys have their A-Game and knows these tracks real well, and that's what I like, going up against the best at every track we visit,” remarked reigning NASCAR Cup points king Stewart, who won a qualifying heat last summer at Canandaigua before rain washed out the main event that the Columbus, Ind. Superstar was unable to return for. “But now we've got some good notes and we'll be back to give 'em another run next year. We got a lot more racey as we went on tonight and it was a great run with Chuck (Hebing) so we're pleased how things turned out.”

Alan Johnson Leads Parade Of Winners In Return To CMP Victory Lane

Guererri, Marsden, Minutolo, Ferguson & Meeks march on with fairgrounds firsts

Corvettes By TurnerCanandaigua, NY – July 21, 2012 – It was deja-vu all over again Saturday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park with all-time Original Pizza Logs Big-Block Modified winner Alan Johnson the only driver not extending a streak in the action-packed card.
Corvettes By Turner Nite continued the winning ways for a handful of racers as Russ Marsden (Parts Plus Street Stock) and David Ferguson (Castner Performance 305 Sprint) scored their fourth successive wins while Marc Minutolo (Pure Stock) captured a third consecutive checkered flag. Paul Guererri (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman Modified) and Tyler Meeks (New Legends Sportsman) each made it two straight on the fast Ontario Co. Fairgrounds half-miler.
Alan Johnson - Win #116Second-generation superstar Johnson from Middlesex took his first trip to victory lane one month earlier although his 116th career Big-Block triumph at the track he helped anoint as the 'Land of Legends' was staged in far more thrilling fashion.
“It was pretty tight there at the end, not enough room there for 3-wide racing but we did anyway and it was a lot of fun,” down-played Johnson, after overtaking Gary Tomkins with just two to go en route to a stirring three car-length victory in the headline 35-lapper. A more convincing straightaway margin after taking the lead at the midway mark provided a less dramatic result on June 23. “The low side was pretty well burned up and the high line was too at the end, so the car just rolled around the center nice when it counted.”

Phelps & Guererri Romp In Return To Canandaigua Winner's Circle

Top Troyer teams tame open-wheel opposition on Saturday at Ontario Co. Fairgrounds

Dig Safely Call 811Canandaigua, NY – July 14, 2012 – The time-tested Troyer clan took center stage Saturday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park with Jimmy Phelps and Paul Guererri splitting open-wheel feature wins on DigSafelyNewYork811 Night.
Both veterans pulled away for decisive half-straightaway victories as Phelps posted his second 35-lap Original Pizza Logs Big-Block Modified win of the season and Guererri registered his division-high fourth triumph in the 25-lap Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman Modified main.
Russ Marsden remained the most dominant driver in 2012 after collecting his track-best ninth Parts Plus Street Stock trophy while fellow full-fender pilot Marc Minutolo added win number six in the Pure Stock ranks. North country newcomer Tyler Meeks scored his first-ever win in the New Legends Sportsman finale.
Phelps swapped spots with Rob Bellinger early in the Big-Block headliner before taking command for good on lap 15 aboard the potent Andy Phelps Motorsports no. 99J J&B Installations-Industrial Tire-Town Mechanical/Troyer machine.
“These (1st-place) trophies are hard to come by, so its pretty special,” remarked Phelps, who netted his first career Big-Block win at CMP in mid-May during his initial season as a fairgrounds regular. “Fortunately we had a real good starting position because we've been so bad the last few weeks.”

Sheppards Share CMP Checkers On Saturday In Historic Speedway Sweep

Minutolo matches father's mark while Marsden, Nutting & Ferguson make it back-to-back

Syracuse NationalsCanandaigua, NY – July 7, 2012 – Stu and Matt Sheppard turned victory lane into a family affair on Saturday as the Waterloo racers became the first father/son duo to win features on the same night in 60 years of competition at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
Defending track champion Matt extended his points lead after scoring a division-high tying fifth Original Pizza Logs Big-Block Modified win while Stu closed out the open-wheel action with his first Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman victory in 25 years at the Ontario County Fairgrounds.
The curtain came down on Syracuse Nationals Night at the 'Legends of Legends' with Russ Marsden (Parts Plus Street Stock) and Daryl Nutting (New Legends Sportsman) posting their second successive wins, Dave Ferguson (Castner Performance 305 Sprint) making it three straight and Marc Minutolo (Pure Stock) winning for the fifth time in 2012.
Its not unusual nowadays for the name Sheppard to echo over the loud speaker during victory lane ceremonies. Yet hearing it twice on the same night marked an extraordinary occasion as no family had ever taken home two trophies after one show since the Canandaigua gates first swung open in 1953.
“Always said I didn't want to get back into racing, just too much work,” beamed Stu, 53, who last won at CMP in August of 1987, ending Canandaigua's inaugural Sportsman season with a total of eight wins and settling for second-place in the final point standings. “But this makes it fun right here. Its pretty cool Matt winning on the same night, too.”
The customary handicapped start paired Sheppard outside front row and the seasoned veteran out-dragged pole-sitter Loren Lincoln to lead off the 25-lap Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman finale. 2008 CMP points champ Kevin Ridley made his presence known early, charging from 10th to crack the Top-5 with just a handful of laps complete.
Chasing Sheppard throughout, Frank 'Bubba' Burnell Jr. was on the brink of registering his best finish of the season, holding onto second ahead of Greg Cool, Ridley and current points leader Dan Wiesner with 15 laps scored. But Ridley was not done, grabbing third from Cool on lap 17 and plowing under Burnell for the runner-up slot on lap 20 as they traded paint down the back chute and into turn three.

Johnson Stays Cool, Cops 5th Big-Block Modified Win On Hot Canandaigua Card

Henderson & Nutting romp in open-wheel mains, Marsden & Vanderwall best full-fender fields

Canandaigua CarpetsCanandaigua, NY – June 30, 2012 – Hazy, hot and humid conditions were evident outdoors, yet inside the cockpit veteran Danny Johnson remained cool and totally under control as he paraded through the pack to score a division-high fifth Original Pizza Logs Big-Block Modified feature win of the season Saturday at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
The second-generation superstar from Rochester charged from 18th starting position to overtake race-long leader Derrick Podsiadlo on lap 23 en route to claiming a commanding 10 car-length victory over Watertown's Billy Dunn in the headline 35-lapper.
Corby's CollisionJoining Johnson in victory lane on Canandaigua Carpets-Corby's Collision Night were Justin Henderson (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman), Russ Marsden (Parts Plus Street Stock), Vance Vanderwall (Pure Stock) and Daryl Nutting (New Legends Sportsman). Ryan Widrick took top honors in the 1-on-1 Spectator Drag Races to cap off another entertaining evening in Canandaigua.
Career win number 77 at the Ontario County Fairgrounds moves Johnson within striking distance of defending champion Matt Sheppard (finished 9th) as 20 points now separate two of the area's hottest commodities in their bid for the coveted Canandaigua crown with two full months still left on the 2012 CMP schedule.

Lanigan Continues On Record Pace With World Of Outlaws LMS Victory At Canandaigua

Rauscher & Britten triumph in Modified Invite, Marcuccilli takes home 1st career CMP trophy
Darrell LaniganCanandaigua, NY – June 26, 2012 – The record watch is clearly in focus for Darrell Lanigan on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Win number seven this season arrived Tuesday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in Upstate New York and the Union, Ky. veteran has 24 races around the rest of country to set the record straight.
“Its too early to look at anything, records or points, there's a long way to go and anything can happen,” downplayed Lanigan, 42, after scoring his fifth win in the last eight races to extend his points lead in quest of a second WoO LMS Championship. “We just go race to race and see what we can win.”
Joining Lanigan in victory lane for Canandaigua's lone mid-week show of the season presented by Ballantyne RV & Marine and Sweeteners Plus, Inc. were Original Pizza Logs Big-Block Modified Invitational winners Dave Rauscher and Peter Britten, and Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman victor Dave Marcuccilli; each capturing their first checkered flags of the 2012 campaign at the Ontario County Fairgrounds.
Third time was a charm for Lanigan, who finished fourth in 2008 and sixth in 2009, the only other appearances made by the national touring group at the historic half-mile clay oval nestled in the heart of the Empire State's Finger Lakes Region.
The 2008 Outlaws Series points champion crossed the finish line nearly three seconds ahead of area favorites Tim McCreadie and Tim Fuller, both from Watertown, and southern all-stars Clint Smith from Georgia and Bub McCool from Mississippi. McCreadie (14) and Fuller (2) both own Big-Block feature wins at Canandaigua, where T-Mac captured the A-Main in '09.
“This was definitely a good car. We fell back there a little bit in the beginning, just lost some positions getting on the wrong spot of the race track, but rallied back there on top. Man, this car was good,” remarked Lanigan, who's only other series win in NYS was at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in Elbridge.

Sizzling McCreadie Ready For World of Outlaws Late Model Series Invasion Of Canandaigua Motorsports Park On Tuesday (June 26)

Former DIRTcar Big-Block Regular Leads National Full-Fender Tour To Track Where He ‘Grew Up’

WoO Late ModelsCANANDAIGUA, NY – June 25, 2012 – Canandaigua Motorsports Park isn’t just one of Tim McCreadie’s favorite racetracks. It’s also his home away from home.

So it should come as no surprise that McCreadie will happily lead the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to Canandaigua for the first time since 2009 on Tuesday night (June 26). The evening’s 40-lap, $8,000-to-win A-Main – a race sponsored by McCreadie’s car owner Carl Myers’s business, Sweeteners Plus, and Ballantyne RV & Marine – will provide him an opportunity to create another cherished memory at a half-mile fairgrounds oval that’s close to his heart.

“I tell everybody that I lived in Watertown (N.Y.),” said the 38-year-old McCreadie, “but I grew up in Canandaigua.”

Indeed, McCreadie began frequenting the speedway known as the ‘Land of Legends’ as a nine-year-old when his father, legendary DIRTcar big-block Modified driver ‘Barefoot’ Bob McCreadie, became a regular at the track. He went on to launch his own racing career there, compete successfully in Canandaigua’s weekly big-block division and make the facility the site of arguably the most emotional victory of his competitive life.

“I love Canandaigua,” said McCreadie. “I know Lafargeville (Can-Am Motorsports Park) is really close to my home, but I’ve spent more Saturday nights at Canandaigua and raced there more than any other track.
